[Special Feature: Vesak Day] Frasers Hospitality wishes everyone in Singapore a happy public holiday –17th May 2011.

Vesak Day which is also known as Wesak Day in some countries. It is a Buddhist holiday commemorating the birth, enlightenment and death of the historical Shakyamuni Gautam Buddha.

This celebration is celebrated on different days by different traditions due to the diverse Buddhist cultures globally.

During this celebration, monasteries are decorated with Buddhist flags, flowers and followers will abstain from meat as an act of compassion.

Celebrating Vesak is also to embrace the act of generosity, to bring happiness to the unfortunate like the aged, the handicapped and the sick with activities such as freeing of caged birds and animals, visiting and giving alms to the poor and needy, and organizing mass blood donation at hospitals. The celebration concludes with a candlelit procession through the streets. Observers as well as devotees are welcome to join in the celebration at Buddhist temples.
