Paris Plages – Enjoy the Paris Beach

Did you know that every summer, two miles of the Seine (near the Pont Neuf) is turned into Paris Plage (Paris Beach), a beach complete with white sand and sunbeds? It’s free to play petanque and volleyball plus there’s entertainment, from comedy to trip-hop. The summer transforms Paris. The cityscape dons greenery and the riverside thoroughfares become car-free resorts, its ths start of The Paris Plages.

Inaugurated in 2002, Paris Plages is a free summer event that transforms several spots in Paris into full-fledged beaches, each with a distinct theme. The brainchild of Paris Mayor Bertrand Delanoe, has become a permanent fixture in the Parisian summertime scene. For several weeks, the roads along the Seine are closed, and a “beach” is created. Mid-July through August, over 2,000 tons of white sand is brought onto the banks from Ile St. Louis to the Jardin des Tuileries for this temporary beach party.Potted palm trees are placed, beach chairs and umbrellas are arranged.                                                                A second stretch, along the Canal de l’Ourcq (75019/Metro Stalingrad), also draws crowds with yet more concerts, outdoor games and sand.                                                           Just one word of warning – don’t get carried away. You’re not in Saint Tropez and Paris’s waters are not fit for swimming in! According to project designer Jean-Christophe Choblet, the aim of this beach is lazing and strolling by the water. Bet you never thought you’d have to pack your bucket and spade for a weekend in Paris!                                           Paris Plages 2011 remains open daily between July 21st to August 21st, from 8:00 a.m. to midnight. In 2011, Paris Plages has three main locations: on the square in front of City Hall (Hotel de Ville), along the right banks of the Seine river on the Georges Pompidou Expressway, and along the Quai de la Villette in northeastern Paris.                                        For your stay in paris, why not take advantage of our promotion: ‘Summer in Paris’ in both Fraser Suites Harmonie Paris La Defense and Fraser Suites Le Claridge Champs-Elysees to discover this magnificent city or stroll around the seine for a quick sunbathing session! .
