Paris Itinerary for families

Paris, the cosmopolitan capital of France is known by many names; the city of love, city of romance but its most famous is “La Ville-Lumière” (“The City of Light” or “The Illuminated City”). Known for culture, art, fashion, food and design, Paris is not a destination that comes to mind when one is planning a family holiday with children. However, armed with the right knowledge, Paris can be a wonderful family holiday destination. This city has many attractions which are perfect for families with children, in particular museums that have been built in the last two decades as part of a development project. As part of the effort to make themselves family friendly, a number of monuments and museums offer guided tours and special workshops for children. Parents can choose to either accompany their children or perhaps take the opportunity to do some shopping  or just simply take a break. Entries to most places are free for under-18s, or reduced rates apply if not.

Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie – Start the family vacation by bringing everyone to   the biggest science museum in Europe. Located in Parc de la Villette complex, the Cité offers a myriad of activities that make technology and science fun and interesting for children; talks, an aquarium, a IMAX 3-D cinema, Cités des Enfants, des Métiers, de la Santé, exhibitions, a media library, planetarium, a submarine (the Argonaute (S636), workshops for people of all ages, etc. Attracting about five million visitors a year, the museum even has special areas for children and teenagers.

Opening hours: Tuesday – Saturday 10am – 6pm. Sunday: 10am – 7pm.

Musée Grévin – The children love this one, founded in 1882 by Arthur Meyer, it is one of the oldest wax museums in Europe. Showcasing life-size waxworks of celebrities and famous people such as pop legend Madonna, world renowned artiste Pablo Picasso, Marvel superhero Spider-man, French pop star Lorie, jazz icon Louis Armstrong, Albert Einstein or King Louis XIV, Mahatma Gandhi, Pope John Paul II, etc. Located on the Grands Boulevards in the IXe arrondissement on the right bank of the Seine, this museum contains some 450 characters arranged in scenes from the history of France and modern life from Charlemagne to Napoleon III, bloody scenes of the French Revolution,   The tableau of Charlotte Corday murdering Jean-Paul Marat includes the actual knife and bathtub used. Pretty cool huh. Take the children here and let them meet their favorite ‘celebrity’ up close and personal. Fun time for the entire family.

Monday-Friday: 10am to 6.30pm.
Saturday, Sunday, public holidays and school holidays: 10am-7pm.

Aquarium of Paris, Cinéaqua – Located at Jardins du Trocadéro, Aquarium of Paris is one of the city’s best kept secrets. Feeling overwhelmed by all the zipping scooters and endless streets? Escape with your family into the Trocadéro gardens, right in the heart of Paris and enjoy a relaxing experience. The Aquarium of Paris has 43 tanks, over 10,000 fish and invertebrates, 25 sharks, a touch pool, two cinema auditoriums and interactive activities, making this the perfect place to bring your family for a day of fun and excitment.  The aquarium has regularly updated workshops, performances and educational films for the children.

Musée de la Magie – Rabbits popping out of hats, pigeons disappearing into thin air, colored scarfs that seem to come out of no where and go on and on forever. Every kid grows up fascinated by magic and probably wishing they were a magician. Also known as the Musée de la Curiosité et de la Magie and the Académie de la Magie, this private museum is located in the 4th arrondissement. Occupying the 16th-century cellars beneath the Marquis de Sade’s house, the museum is a popular destination for families and children. In the museum’s seven rooms you and your family will find an impressive collection of magical objects: from wands, boxes, magicians’ hats to card tricks, white rabbits, magic trunks, vanishing tricks, optical illusions and magic mirrors. For the budding child magician, there are experts on site to answer any tough magic related questions you may have. Be sure that you don’t miss the regular shows that will entertain, amaze and wow kids and grown-ups alike.

Jardin des Tuileries – Paris is littered with lovely gardens and parks with picturesque green lawns that are perfect for lying around with a blanket, cheese and a good bottle of French wine. Located between Musée du Louvre and the Place de la Concorde, it was created by Catherine de Medicis as the garden of the Tuileries Palace in 1564. Jardin des Tuileries are among the loveliest and most famous gardens in Paris, but has the “pelouse interdite” (no sitting on the grass) rule. But that shouldn’t stop you and your family from enjoying a nice picnic: just pull up some of the green metallic chairs that are liberally placed through the gardens, and eat away to your hearts’ content.
