Shopping in Shanghai

Known as the premier shopping destination in China, Shanghai has become an integral and indispensable part of the booming tourism industry. With a mind boggling variety of shops and products at fantastic prices, it’s not hard to understand why this city is known as THE ‘shopping paradise’ and also ‘Oriental Paris’. Shopping areas in Shanghai can be classified into ‘Four Streets’ and ‘Four Cities’.

Nanjing Road – Among the four streets, there is one in particular that holds the distinguished title of the number one commercial street in China – Nanjing Road (including East Nanjing Road and West Nanjing Road). Developed at the start of the 20th century, Nanjing Road has a unique blend of history and modernism, there are shops which have a history of several hundred years standing next to modern malls. Despite fierce competition, Nanjing Road has prospered in recent times. It is a rather long street, Nanjing Road East is a 1-km long pedestrian boulevard lined with many shops and is often packed with people and shoppers on weekends and holidays. This part of Nanjing road is a favorite with domestic tourists as the prices are quite reasonable. Huaihai Road, no less famous than Nanjing Road, caters to the upscale crowd. It has the top fashion labels and designers from all over the world such as Gucci, Ferragamo, Hugo Boss, Bally among others.

Yuyuan Shopping City, Xujiahui Shopping City, New Shanghai Shopping City and Jiali Sleepless City are the bustling “Four Cities” in Shanghai. Yuyuan Shopping City is the place to go for specialty Chinese goods from small articles, local crafts to antiques, jade wares, gold and silver jewelry. The newly-established shopping and entertainment plaza, Xujiahui shopping city is a newly established entertainment and shopping plaza for shoppers with a mid to high budget. New Shanghai Shopping City is located in the middle of Pudong Luijiazui Finance and Trade Zone and is surrounded by many retail outlets. For those interested in boutique shopping, head to the French Concession Streets Xinle Lu, Changle Lu and Anfu Lu. This area of low rise buildings has an array of  clothing boutiques selling the latest fashion and accessories.

If you have more time, in addition to the ‘four cities and streets’, be sure to check out these other places. Hong Kong Famous Shops Street and Dimei Shopping Center beneath People’s Square and Xiangyang Road – trinkets and cheap clothing. Dimei Shopping Center – fashionable clothing at competitive prices (Bargaining is highly recommended!). Nan Wai Tan Fabric Market – Located in Lujiabang Road, it is arguably the largest fabric market in Shanghai. There are many tailors in the vicinity of the fabric market, where customers can get tailored suits, dresses, shirts at good rates. Gome, Guotong and Quyang Home Appliance City – head here to buy affordable quality household appliances.
