One of the most highly anticipated sporting events of the year is back again – the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix. Feel the hairs on your arms stand as the roar of the engine of a finely tuned and explosive that is the Formula One race car, resonates throughout the circuit. Capable of reaching speeds of up to 320 kilometres per hour, these race cars are worth quite the small fortune. Taking place from 27 to 29 July 2012, the Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix is only a 35-minute drive from our serviced apartments, Fraser Residence Budapest.

The Grand Prix race is a 70-lap race which stretches over a total distance of 306.630 km. The Hungaroring circuit was built in 1986, specifically for Formula One racing in Budapest. A series of practice and qualifying sessions will be held prior to the actual race on Sunday. Spectators can purchase tickets and catch all the Formula One cars in action for all three days. So fasten your seatbelts as the winner of F1 Budapest 2011, Jenson Button returns to defend his podium spot. Or will the other drivers pip him to the chequered flag this time?

History of Hungarian Grand Prix

The Formula One series originated with the European Grand Prix Motor Racing of the 1920s and 1930s. The “formula” is a set of rules which all the participants’ cars have to adhere. Formula One was a new formula established after World War II during 1946. The first official world championship race took place in Silverstone, United Kingdom in 1950. The Italian racer Giuseppe Farina was the first Formula One World Champion.

The first Hungarian Grand Prix took place on June 21, 1936 over a 5 km track laid out in Népliget, a park in Budapest. Teams from Mercedes-Benz, Auto Union, and Ferrari participated in the event which gathered a large crowd. However, politics and the ensuing war resulted in the suspension of the Formula One Grand Prix in Budapest for 50 years. The Formula One Grand Prix only returned to Budapest in 1986 when the Hungaroring circuit was constructed. The 1986 Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix attracted about 200,000 spectators. Today, Hungarian Grand Prix is an internationally popular annual racing event held in the mid-summer every year, attracting people from around the world.

Mark Webber – An Australian Formula One driver from the Red Bull Racing Team, Mark Webber has claimed two glorious victories at theMonaco Grand Prix and British Grand Prix for this 2012 season. Recently, he has signed a new Formula One deal with Red Bull for the 2013 season. He is now second behind Fernando Alonso in this year’s Formula One driver rankings. So will he live up to expectations and claim his next victory at the Formula One Grand Prix Budapest?

Sebastian Vettel – All eyes are on the two times Formula One World Champion (2010 and 2011) and German Formula One racing driver, Sebastian Vettel.  Driving for Red Bull, he is currently behind Fernando Alonso and Red Bull teammate Mark Webber in the driver rankings.  Although there is still time for him to catch up and defend his World Championship title.

Fernando Alonso – Widely considered as one of the greatest Formula One drivers in the world, Fernando Alonsois the youngest double World Champion for Formula One Grand Prix. Winning the championship title twice in 2005 and 2006, Alonso who is racing for Scuderia Ferrari is set to defend his number one position in the drivers’ ranking. Currently in the lead for this year’s Formula One Grand Prix, he is the favourite to win the championship this season.

Lewis Hamilton – The first black driver in Formula One,Lewis Hamilton was the 2008 Formula One World Champion. Currently racing for McLaren team, he is now in the fourth position for 2012 Formula One Grand Prix.

Jenson Button –This British Formula One driver was the Formula One World Champion in 2009 for Brawn GP. Jenson Button moved to McLaren team in 2010, partnering with former World Champion Lewis Hamilton. After finishing fifth for the team in 2010, Button finished the 2011 season as the first runner-up. He has emerged from Lewis Hamilton’s shadow to become McLaren’s leading driver, making him a driver to look out for.  Button who was also the defending champion of last year’s Hungarian Formula One Grand Prix.
