Istanbul’s nightlife

Istanbul – One of the most dynamic cities in Asia or Europe, depending on where you are standing, this metropolis does fusion like no where else in the world. It’s breathtakingly beautiful. Located on both sides of the Bosphorus aka the Istanbul Strait, with the Black Sea and the Marmara Sea on either side, the sight of the city’s skyline rising over the calm waters is absolutely stunning.

Not only does Istanbul bridges Asia and Europe both physically and culturally, this is also a city that doesn’t sleep. Istanbullus (residents of Istanbul) are known for many things, from shopping to cuisine but perhaps what they are most known for is…partying. The night life in Istanbul is massive and there are many popular establishments but unlike most cosmopolitan cities, Istanbul does not have a rampant clubbing scene. The city’s nightlife centers, instead, around trendy and tasty restaurants that turn into crowded bars/clubs after dinner. While the list is by all means not exhaustive, here are some of the top nightspots frequented by the locals.

1. Bird – Well known amongst the locals, bird is a popular restaurant by day but come midnight, the restaurant tables disappear and diners are displaced by a young upscale crowd, all clutching cocktails and swaying to the music. It may take awhile for you to get served at the bar as it is always filled to capacity so you might want to be generous with your tip so the bartender recognises you for your subsequent rounds. Bird is quite hard to miss as it always has revellers spilling out into the streets in a cloud of cigarette smoke and loud conversation.

2. Anjelique — Both a restaurant and nightclub, Anjelique is a three-story seaside mansion located in Ortaköy on the shore of the Bosphorus. With a stunning view of the Istanbul Strait, the first floor serves Asian cuisine while the middle and top floors feature delicious Mediterranean dishes. After dinner, it turns into one of Istanbul’s most famous nightspots. With different genres on each floor, the Anjelique sees a wide variety of people through its doors and the party goes on until dawn.

3. 360 — The place to see and be seen. 360 is located in a penthouse of a 19th century apartment building with 360 degrees (hence the name) fascinating landscape views of Istanbul all the way up of St Antoine’s Church and across the Bosphorus strait to the Hagia Sophia and out to the Sea of Marmara. 360’s concept consists of four crucial elements; Cuisine, design, entertainment, and atmosphere. There are three conncected areas – 360Bar, Lounge Bar and Fire Bar – each decorated in an elegant, minimalist style. The club comes alive in the weekends, with DJs, vocalists with live dancers, performances, and non-stop partying until the early morning hours.

4. Lucca -Still one of the most popular spots for celeb spotting, Lucca is further up the Bosphorus and also Istanbul’s social ladder. Not sure exactly where it is, just follow the steady stream of ferraris and porsches trailing towards Lucca. With a prominent location at the heart of Bebek’s cafe scene, Lucca is another establishment that starts the day as a restaurant and turns into a dimly lit bar with house music after midnight. And did we mention already that it is a magnet for Istanbul high society so if you want to rub shoulders with the who’s who of Istanbul, this is the place for you.

5. SuadaWhile most establishments can claim to occupy prime property in Istanbul, few or none can better Suada. This night club is not located by the Bosphorus but in it! Suada is essentially a floating club in the Bosporus with a Olympic size pool where the beautiful people come to work on their tan, sip world-class cocktails, and nibble on the finest sushi and other international cuisine this place has to offer.

There is actually quite a bit of history behind this island. Located 165 meters away from the European shore in Kuruçeşme it was given as a present by Sultan Abdülaziz in 1872 to Serkis Kalfa (head architect of the Ottoman palace). Being the architect that he was, Serkis Kalfa built a three-storey mansion on the island which served as his home and lived there till 1899. After the first world war, the island was rented and used as a coal storehouse. In 1957 Galatasaray Sports Club bought the island and transformed it into a social facility.
