Designed to fit the needs of Budapest’s cultural heritage and support its claims as a modern European hub, the Budapest Spring Festival was introduced in 1981. Through cultural performances, the ‘festival of festivals’ boosts the city’s image and encourages tourism into the Hungarian capital. In 2012, the Budapest Spring Festival had over 40,000 visitors making it one of the most popular events in the capital’s cultural calendar. And this year, the organizers have decided to extend the festivities to 17 days! Traditionally covering a range of artistic fields, the festival’s main emphasis is on the symphony orchestra concerts, opera and ballet performances which attracts numerous classical music, opera and jazz fans from all around the world.
The performances take place in the capital’s most important concert halls and theatres, and often near historic monuments. Over the years a number of regional towns have been included in the Budapest Spring Festival – Debrecen, Gödöllő, Győr, Kaposvár, Kecskemét, Sopron, Szentendre and Szombathely – and thus it has more or less expanded into a national festival. Visitors coming to the festival this year can expect artistes such as Christoph Prégardien, Joshua Bell, Marc Minkowski, Patricia Petibon and Philippe Herreweghe.
