Spring time in Budapest

Making snow angels, building igloos and snowmen, going sledging with friends and family – these are all activities we love and have come to associate with winter.  For some people, it’s their favorite season as it precedes the arrival of what is probably the world’s most popular holiday – Christmas. For others, it’s one of the most miserable times of the year, frozen pipes, astronomical heating bills, layers and layers of clothing. Whatever your disposition is towards winter, one thing is for certain. Spring is coming. As we enter into the month of March, the days are getting longer and the weather is getting warmer. It’s the perfect in between of the freezing chills of winter and the blistering sweltering heat of summer. It is the season of rebirth, rejuvenation, renewal, resurrection, and regrowth.

Although spring only really starts in April, you can see little signs of it now in Budapest, the flora and fauna slowly come back to life, the snow starts melting and as soon as it becomes warm and sunny, the entire city shakes off its winter slumber and comes alive. Spring is also the best time to get good deals on plane tickets and accommodation in Budapest before the summer prices kick in . In addition you will also also find fewer crowds, making it one of the best times to visit the Hungarian capital. Here are the top five things to do in Budapest this spring!

Exploring the treasure box

As the days become warmer, it’s more pleasant to walk around the sights in Budapest. Some attractions and look-out towers open after the winter while others extend their opening hours. The most important places to visit are the Heroes’ Square with the Castle of Vajdahunyad and the City Park, the Chain Bridge, the Buda Castle, the Liberty Bridge, the Parliament of Hungary, the great Synagogue, and the Citadel with the Statue of Liberty and the best view to the whole city.

What most Hungarians love most about spring is that nature comes alive and finally we can sit outside on a nice terrace, a park café or a ruin pub’s garden. Squares become crowded with city breakers and locals hanging around with friends. The botanic garden of ELTE University offers a peaceful walk through many fantastic flowers and trees. Don’t miss out the cherry blossom days! Margaret Island itself is worth visiting but once you are there, take a look at the Japanese Garden, considered the most romantic place in Budapest during spring. Budapest Zoo is also a very popular attraction, with lovely gardens, a palm house and of course all kinds of animals from all over the world.
