In the Thick of the Action

With its historical landmarks, shining skyscrapers and cosmopolitan vibe, Shanghai is often held up as the poster child of China’s economic prosperity. One area that captures the best of Shanghai is the Luwan district.

It is both the modern and ancient heart of the city, a badge of honour that has not lost its shine. As part of the old French concession area, Luwan district is famous as much for its picturesque boulevards – lined on both sides with old French plane trees – as for its rich history, famous sites like Xintiandi and The Bund, and vibrant dining, shopping and entertainment.

And Fraser Residence Shanghai’s prime location right in Luwan District means a majority of the city’s attractions is just a hop, skip and jump away. Soak in the city’s history-meets-future dynamism, shop till you drop for bargains and trend-setting designs, and feast your way through some of the country’s most exciting establishments.

What’s more, the Pudong financial district is a mere 12 minutes’ drive away, where iconic landmarks like the Shanghai World Finance centre and Jin Mao Tower stud the impressive skyline.

Below are some of our top places to visit:

The Bund

Appreciate Shanghai’s past and present from the city’s iconic waterfront promenade, flanked by historic concession era architecture and flamboyant skyscrapers. The presence of top dining and drinking establishments – Mr & Mrs Bund, Mercato by Jean Georges – gives one even more excuse to linger.

Xintiandi

Shanghai’s hottest entertainment, shopping and nightlife quarter, Xintiandi (Lane 123, Xingye Road) is worth a visit for the beautifully restored shikumen terrace houses alone, a historic architecture unique to Shanghai with its european-influenced decorative lintel above stone doorway frames.

Dongtai Road antique market

Take your time to trawl through the sprawling open-air stalls, whether you’re looking for Mao memorabilia or collectible antiques from the iconic Shanghai Watch brand. Treasure hunting is the order of the day with loads of bargains to be found. Look hard enough and you just might take home your next conversation piece.

Lujiazui

Pudong’s financial district draws more than just the office crowd. Its awe-inspiring skyscrapers and their even more impressive views lure many visitors.
